Trials in life remind me of rough weather. They come up on us unexpectedly, and many times we're vulnerable, and not in an ideal place when they do. But something about trials that I think we all forget from time to time is that God is in control of each and every one of them. He allows trials to come upon us to show us our weakness, but then strengthens us through them (-James 1:2-3). He builds our faith in Him through them. I believe He shows us that He's with us as well through them.
God commands and upholds everything He created (-Colossians 1:17), and like all things in creation, He commands when a trial will start, and when it will be finished. Jesus commanded and used the sea as a trial on a couple of different occasions, to show the disciples that He was with them during hard times, and to build their faith
(-Matthew 8:23-27, Matthew 14:25-33).
Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters, They see the works of the Lord, And His wonders in the deep. For He commands and raises the stormy wind, Which lifts up the waves of the sea. They mount up to the heavens, They go down again to the depths; Their soul melts because of trouble. They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, And are at their wits’ end. Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble, And He brings them out of their distresses. He calms the storm, So that its waves are still. Then they are glad because they are quiet; So He guides them to their desired haven.
-Psalm 107:23-30
